THE VERY NAUGHTY CELL TESTIMONIALS

The Very Naughty Cell is a wonderfully written and illustrated book from a child’s perspective about her parent’s cancer journey. As a parent who has had several members diagnosed with cancer, it helped explain basic concepts and treatments in an age appropriate, kid friendly manner. The book described all of the emotions children can experience when having a loved one diagnosed with cancer and provided a forum to have a great discussion with my children on a difficult topic.
— Rachel Lang, Hospital Social Worker
There is enough going on with cancer treatment that even adults can have trouble piecing it all together. “The Very Naughty Cell” is an illustrated, real story that takes complex ideas and distills them into language children can understand about cancer. Throughout it never loses sight of a lesson any reader can take with them. Despite the hard days, the overwhelming emotions, and the changes in routine and appearance—the warmth and love of a family persists.

The Very Naughty Cell is a wonderful, age-appropriate book that helps children understand cancer. It is a fantastic read for any young child that has questions about a loved one’s cancer experience from treatment to emotional concerns.
— Taylor Fischman, LMSW Program Director  Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor
The Very Naughty Cell is an exceptional book that takes a unique and child centric approach to chronicling a parent’s cancer diagnosis. Written from a child’s perspective, it captures the very emotional journey of navigating a parents cancer diagnosis and treatment while ensuring that their child feels secure, informed, and ultimately empowered.  Moreover, this book has helped us initiate important conversations about emotions towards cancer within our family. It can sometimes be difficult for young children to comprehend and express their complex feelings about cancer and the additional coloring pages included helped to foster those hard conversations. Highly recommend!
— Jessica, parent with cancer
This is a great book. It is a much-needed, relatable story which explains cancer and its treatment in a way children can understand. The colorful illustrations represent diverse people and will engage young readers. The toll that cancer takes on the children whose family members have it is significant. This book helps give families a way to explain their cancer journey and talk about it with young children. I will recommend it to any family member, friend or parent of my patients who needs to talk with their child about cancer.

When you find out you have cancer, so many different things go through your head. I of course was very worried about how to explain this to my six-year-old son. This book became a great resource to myself ,my husband and my son, when explaining what was going on and the treatment process. I really loved how it was described as a bad cell and that’s how we always referred to the tumor when my son had any questions. I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to explain this to kids and even adults too!
— Amy, parent with cancer
Beautiful explanation of what cancer is, and how it’s gotten rid of, and how it affects people! The fact that the narrator is a child makes it even better for kids. This book is wonderful and so special. I also love that there’s a space for children to be creative through writing and drawing! Great illustrations.

As a pediatric nurse practitioner, I will recommend this beautifully written book to my patients who are struggling to understand why people we love sometimes get sick with cancer . The book simplifies the medical aspects of the diagnosis/treatment ( which is the most difficult for kids to comprehend)and focuses on the emotional aspect from a child’s point of view.

As a supporter of a dear friend, who is mom to a seven year old and battling breast cancer for the past ten years, I am very aware of the need for this type of children’s literature. I have so much admiration for the author and her daughter/family. Thank you for sharing your story to help others who are on a similar journey.
